One cold wintry night
thousands of years ago, a band of our fur clad early ancestors sat
huddled around a campfire. Encircled on every side of the
fire our ancestors hammered and honed a new found stone they recently
unearthed. The multi-colored stone was pliable but solid and when
sharpened was razor edge keen as any modern day knife. These ancestors
learned they could use this new stone in arrow heads. Attached
to their bows these arrow heads were deadly accurate and brought down
much game. Eventually, they began forming these stones into knives,
spears, and items of war. The Indians had located Novaculite
and it would change their way of life.

It was only in the early
1800's did white men learn of this miraculous new tool and how to use
it. Mountain men were the first to see a tool made from
Novaculite. Indians were soon trading the stone up and down the
Ouachita River and white traders sent it to Louisiana by flat boat!
Novaculite was reaching as far West as Arizona and as eastward as the
Carolina's. A good thing had caught on with a vengeance!
